Today I saw someone I haven’t seen for a while and have only dealt with on a professional basis. I couldn’t remember the last time we saw each other whether it was handshake or hug, so I erred on the side of caution and went with handshake… while she was trying to give me a hug. It was awkward but still preferable to assuming hug, going for a hug, and having the other person going for a handshake. That’s worse. Much worse.
